Abstract:  Over 300 million people in 44 countries have Spanish as their native language. It is the second most common native language in the world. In the US, over 41 million people aged five or older speak Spanish at home. In this course, participants will learn practical tips that are essential for the accurate neuropsychological evaluation and diagnosis of Spanish-speaking adults with or without neurological disorders. The influence of culture, beliefs, language, education, familism, gender roles, religion, and acculturation on neuropsychological assessment and performance will be discussed. Culturally and linguistically appropriate neuropsychological norms are often lacking for the most used neuropsychological tests in the United States. Therefore, we will also present the results of a large, national norming study of 15 neuropsychological tests conducted in a sample of healthy participants aged 18 and older from 10 states. Bayesian Generalized Linear Models were used to assess the effects of covariates on neuropsychological test scores. Statistically significant factors are included in the resulting normative data, which can be accessed via an easy-to-use calculator. Using practical examples, this course will offer participants the necessary skills to appropriately and reliably choose and use normative data for a given Spanish-speaking client in the United States. Furthermore, participants will gain insight into the accurate neuropsychological assessment of this growing population.

Dr. Juan Carlos Arango Lasprilla is a professor at IKERBASQUE. Basque Foundation of Science at the University of the Basque country in Spain. He is a clinical neuropsychologist whose areas of expertise include brain injury, neurorehabilitation and cross-cultural issues. He currently has more than 400 publications between articles and book chapters, and his research has been published in several of the best medical and psychology journals in the world. He has been instrumental in securing over $10 million dollars in grant funds as PI and co-PI, primarily focusing on research with culturally-diverse populations. During his professional career he has received around 20 recognitions, awards and/or distinctions both nationally and internationally. These include the Alejandro Ángel Escobar Award (Colombia), the Colombian Psychology Award (Colombia), five awards from the American Psychological Association (United States), the Early Career Award from the National Academy of Neuropsychology (United States), the scholarship Ramón y Cajal from the Ministry of Education of Spain (Spain), the Arthur Benton Mid-Career award from the International Neuropsychological Society (United States), The Mitchell Rosenthal Mid-Career award from the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (United States United States), and the young investigator award by the International Brain Injury Association (Scotland), and the life time achievement award for the APA division 22 among others. In 2021, Dr. Arango was included in the prestigious list of Stanford University in which the 2% of the most influential researchers in the world.

Learning Objectives:  This talk will help you:

1. List three factors that influence neuropsychological evaluation and performance in the Spanish-speaking population in the U.S.
2. Explain two key criteria for selecting and using normative data for the Spanish-speaking population in the U.S.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of how to apply the new norms derived from a large national study in clinical practice
